Summer Learning Journey Week 4 Day 4

Day 4: Contemporary Entertainment

Activity 1: Moana
moana.jpg
In late 2016, the movie Moana was released by Disney. It’s a beautiful story about a young Polynesian girl from the fictional island of Motunui, who goes on a big adventure.

Watch the trailer for Moana and then write a summary of the movie on your blog. If you’ve seen the movie, you can include your favourite part! Tell us as much as you can about the movie. What is it about? Who are the main characters in the movie? What do they do in the movie? Where do they go?

Moana is about two main characters a girl named moana that has to go on a voyage to save her island and the rest from being destroyed, due to Maui the demigod stealing the heart of te fiti so people would like him but it te fiti  into an evil lava monster that is destroying each and every island as time passes. The ocean chooses Moana to be the one to save everyone by giving her the heart that Maui dropped in the sea, so Moana sets of on her journey and eventually finds Maui who she has to force to take back the heart, because he is scared but once they restore it te fiti is back to normal and all the islands are restored in peace.

My favorite part is all the singing during the movies because it makes the movie even more fun because you get to sing along with the characters

Activity 2: Country Calendar
Did you know that the longest running television show in New Zealand history is a programme called ‘Country Calendar’? It started on 6 March 1966 and has been running ever since. The programme includes stories of everyday New Zealanders, many of whom are farmers.

Watch this short clip from Country Calendar. What do you think would be the most interesting and/or challenging things about being a farmer? Would you would like to be a farmer when you are older. Why/why not? Give us, at least, two reasons to support your answer.

I would not enjoy being a farmer
I would not enjoy being a farmer because there are a lot of responsibilities and jobs to look after the animals, also most of the jobs are very tiring and take a lot of energy to accomplish example shearing sheep while the are wiggling all around the place. .

Another reason is farms are not the best smelling places in the world and you have to dodge accidentally walking over poop while you are working which is very smelly and gross..

Farming interest and challenges
It would be interesting working with the animals everyday and learning about their needs and how to care and look after them properly. It would also be very challenging trying to get the animals to listen to me and trying to get them to do what I want them to do, because they have a mind of their own and they can’t speak English. It would also be very challenging and tiring trying to get up really early most days to milk the cows or do other jobs around the farm.

Bonus Activity: Singing a Different Tune
A number of New Zealand (NZ) singers and songwriters have recently burst onto the music scene, becoming popular both in NZ and overseas. One of these artists, Lorde, is gaining a lot of recognition for her unique style and songwriting ability. People all over the world seem to really like the lyrics (words) that she writes in her songs.

Think of your favorite song. Share the name of the song, the name of the person who wrote the song and the lyrics from the song on your blog. You must type the lyrics not cut and paste them in order to earn full points for the activity.

Style
Midnight  you come and pick me up no headlights
Long drive could end in burning flames or paradise
It's been awhile since I have even heard from you
And I should just tell you to leave cause I
Know exactly where it leads but I
Watch it go round and round each time.
You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down we come back every time
Cause we never go out of style we never go out of style
You've got that long hair slicked back white t-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt
And when we go crashing down we come back every time
Cause we never go out of style we never go out of style
So it goes he can't keep his wild eyes on the road
Takes me home lights are off he's taking off his coat Hm yeah
I say I've heard that you’ve been out and about with some other girl  some other girl
He says "What you've heard is true but I
Can't stop thinking about you" and I
I said I've been there too a few times
'Cause you got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style we never go out of style
You've got that long hair slicked back  white t-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt A tight little skirt
And when we go crashing down we come back every time
Cause we never go We never go out of style we never go out of style
Take me home
Just take me home
Yeah just take me home oh
You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style we never go out of style

  2. Hey there Katelyn, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the movie, Moana. I have seen Moana once and I really liked it. It's cool how you learn a bit about the legends of Maui. You're right, the singing is definitely the best part. The kids in my class loved singing along to the soundtrack when they were doing their work.

How many times have you seen Moana?

I like how for the second activity you have listed things you wouldn't like about working as a farmer and also identified other things that would be challenging or interesting. I have to agree with you, I don't think I would enjoy working as a farmer either. It would be stinky, tiring and I hate getting up early. I feel like you would get a sore back and body from all the physical work. It would be a long day out in the sun or rain.

    Thanks Katelyn, great job!

  4. Konichiwa Katelyn,

Thank you for being diligent about typing out the lyrics to your favourite song. You’ve included the name of the song and singer, do you know who wrote this song? Perhaps next time you could add a video or audio link to the song for fast access. What makes this song your favourite? Is it the lyrics, the melody, or something else?

I have heard this song before and although it isn’t a favourite I really like the guitar riff that continues throughout the song. It makes me sway when I hear it. One of my favourite songs at the moment is ‘This is Me’ sung by Keala Settle for the film ‘The Greatest Showman’. Have you heard it before? Here is a link:

Let me know what you think of the song if you get a chance to listen to it!

    Toe feiloa’i fo’i,

    1. Hey Cia,

I really enjoy the melody and the beat because they when ever I listen to the song I like to dance and to the beat, I also like the melody because it sounds really good.

I have not heard 'This is me" before it's not my taste of music but I really liked the drumming beat in the background because it sounded cool and awesome.

Thank you so much for you comment and support!
