Summer Learning Journey Week 4 Day 2

8/1/2018
Day 2: A Decade of Sport

Activity 1: Chasing Great
Over the past 17 years New Zealand has experienced a number of sporting highlights, perhaps none larger than the back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015. In both competitions our national rugby team, the All Blacks, was captained by a man named Richie McCaw. He is arguably one of the best rugby players of all time. A movie called Chasing Great was recently created to document his incredible rugby career.

Please watch the trailer for Chasing Great and read about Richie McCaw online. On your blog tell us three things that you learned about Richie that you did not know beforehand. What else would you like to know about Richie?

Activity 2: Sporting Heroes
When Richie Mccaw first started playing rugby he was not the best but he had passion to become the best he could.

He was also the first ever person in the world to reach 100 tests in the year 2011.

The first time he ever knew about the all blacks was in the 18 world cup.

Bonus -  Richie was first named as the All Blacks captain when he was 23 years old in 2003 during the test against Wales.

In 2015, a kiwi golfer named Lydia Ko became the youngest woman in the world to reach the #1 ranking.  She was only 17 years old. Many people from here in New Zealand and overseas really admire her and think of her as a modern-day sporting hero. Who is your sporting hero? They can be a famous athlete, or even a member of your family or community. It’s completely up to you.

On your blog tell us about your sporting hero. Who are they? Why are they a hero? Include a photo of them in your blog post.

My sporting hero is Lisa Carrington. She is an incredible rower, and last year she was awarded the prestigious  Lonsdale Cup for her amazing results in 2016! She spends hours training, and I think her commitment to her sport is inspiring.

Valerie Adams

My sporting hero is Valerie Adams because she is the best shot putter in the country and has won an Olympic gold medal and more, she is also very humble and doesn't let all the fame and wins get to her head. She is devoted and puts all she has into her sport, she even kept training when she was pregnant with her baby girl.

Bonus Activity: Shake it Off
In recent years, many New Zealanders have embraced a new form of exercise called Zumba©. It was developed by a man named Alberto Perez who lives in the country of Columbia. He created Zumba by bringing together many different dance styles including: cumbia, mambo, hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, tango, merengue and mambo

Choose one of the dance styles mentioned above and click on the name to read more about it. Once you are done, post three interesting facts about the dance style on your blog. In which country did it originate? Who originally created it?

Tango
Sorry there is no information about who specifically invented it.

Tango is dance that was originated in the 1880s from the Río de la  between 2 people, it soon spread to, Argentina, Uruguay, and then the rest of the world.

There are many different styles of the tango including Tango vals, Tango liso, Tango orillero and a lot more.

The first tango was originally named tango criollo and
is a dance made from African, Native american, and european culture.

  2. Hey there Katelyn, thanks for sharing some interesting facts about Richie McCaw. He was such a good captain and such a good role model because he was so humble. It made him a great leader for young people in our country. Have you seen his movie?

    Do you like watching rugby?

    Thanks, Billy

    1. Hey Billy,

Yes I have seen his movie because my nana is a huge rugby fan and my family and I thought it would be a great idea to take her to the movies since hasn't been in years to see Richie's movie. I really enjoyed it and thought it was quite interesting learning about his background story, my nana also thoroughly enjoyed it too!.

Thanks for your comment and support.

    2. Hey, that's a really sweet things that you and your family did for your nana. I'm glad to hear she enjoyed it too.

Have you seen any good movies lately? Or do you mainly just watch TV shows like Stranger Things?

You must have been sad when you finished Stranger Things season 2, knowing you have a long time to wait for the next season!

      Billy :)

  3. Hey Billy,

    Sorry for the late reply.

I haven't seen any interesting movies lately besides Justice league which was really good and is one of my favorite movies, I would recommend it to anyone.

I was really sad when the season finished but I can not wait until next season and I hope that the time passes fast.

Thanks for the comment and support!

  4. Annyeonghaseyo Katelyn,
my name is Cia. I am a Ako Hiko Summer Learning Journey commentator who will be working with various bloggers over the summer break.

    Activity 2:
I love the picture you used of Dame Valerie Adams, it was a joy to watch her compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Did you follow the Rio Games? I think the paragraph you wrote about why she is your sporting hero was brief but brilliant. It really showed how much you value her as a person and a role model just by the way you talked about her sporting accomplishments as well as her stellar personality.

Have you read her autobiography? It’s called ‘Valerie: The Autobiography’ you’d get to learn more about her journey as an athlete and person. Maybe you could check it out at you local library if you have time.

    Bonus Activity:
I like that you made sure to mention that there was no specific information about who exactly created the Tango. Imagine how hard it would be to try and find them, I imagine lots of people would want to take credit. What do you think?

I love watching the people do the Tango, perhaps next time you could include a video of a Tango tutorial for beginners. I’m sure there will be people out there who would be interested.

Thank you for going the extra mile to complete the activities to a high standard! I am really looking forward to reading more of your posts. Keep up the great work!

Toe feiloa’i fo’i ('See you again' in Samoan),

    Cia.

    1. Fakalofa lahi atu Cia,

I watched some of the rio games but I didn't watch all of the games. I have not read her autobiography but I will be sure to look for it the next time I take a trip to the library, I bet it's a fantastic book that I will really enjoy.

I bet lots of people would try to take the credit since most people know about the dance and have passion for the dance.

Thank you so much for your comment and support
